Modeling in India is bigger and more varied than it looks on Instagram. Beyond runway, there are e-commerce catalogues, ad films, ethnic and bridal campaigns, fitness brands, jewellery shoots and more — and most of that work goes to people who are reliable, prepared and easy to find.
This guide walks you through the path step by step, with no shortcuts that cost you money.
Step 1: Understand the types of modeling
| Type | What it involves | Typical requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Fashion & runway | Fashion weeks, designer shows, editorials | Usually taller (often 5'7"+ for women, 5'11"+ for men) and slim |
| Commercial | Ads for everyday products and services | Relatable look, expressive face; height flexible |
| E-commerce & catalogue | Product photos for online stores | Consistent size, good posture, quick changes |
| Ethnic & bridal | Sarees, lehengas, sherwanis, jewellery | Comfort with traditional wear and draping |
| Fitness | Sportswear and supplement brands | Visible fitness and stamina |
| Parts | Hands, feet, hair | Exceptionally well-kept features |
| Plus-size | Inclusive fashion lines | Sizes vary by brand; confidence on camera matters most |
You don’t need to fit runway standards to work. Commercial and catalogue modeling — the largest share of paid work in India — is open to a wide range of heights, ages and body types.
Step 2: Take your digitals
Digitals (also called polaroids) are simple photos that show exactly what you look like today. Agencies and casting teams ask for them first.
- Plain wall, daylight from a window
- Fitted, plain clothing (black or neutral), hair off the face
- Little or no makeup, no filters, no editing
- Shots: front headshot, side profile, three-quarter, full length front and side, smiling and neutral
A friend with a phone is enough. Update them every few months, or whenever your hair or look changes.
Step 3: Build a small, honest portfolio
You don’t need to spend lakhs. Start with 6–10 strong images showing range: a clean headshot, a full-length fashion look, a commercial “smiling” shot and something in ethnic wear. Collaborate with up-and-coming photographers, makeup artists and stylists who are also building their books — find them on Discover.

Step 4: Learn the craft
- Posing: practise in front of a mirror; study how models in campaigns use angles, hands and posture.
- Walking: for runway, practise in heels (or formal shoes) with a straight line and relaxed shoulders.
- Expressions: commercial clients book faces that look natural and approachable on camera.
- Fitness and skin: consistent sleep, hydration, a balanced diet and simple skincare — sustainable habits, not crash diets.
- Professional habits: be on time, reply quickly, bring what’s on the brief and stay positive on long shoot days.
Step 5: Create your Lookz profile
Join Lookz and set yourself up properly:
- Add Model as your role, plus your city.
- Fill in your height, measurements and shoe size — casting teams filter by them.
- Post your best portfolio images and credit the team.
- Switch on Open to work.
Step 6: Apply to castings — carefully
Browse open castings and apply to the ones that genuinely match you. Read the brief, add a short personal note and keep your profile complete. Learn how in How to apply for modeling castings and auditions online.
Step 7: Approach genuine agencies
Agencies find you work in exchange for a commission on jobs you book. Genuine agencies:
- Don’t charge a fee to join or to “register” you
- Ask for digitals, measurements and a short introduction
- Give you a written contract that explains commission, exclusivity and payment terms
Step 8: Get paid fairly
Before you accept any job, confirm in writing:
- Your fee and when it will be paid
- The hours and number of looks
- Usage — where and for how long the images will be used
- Who covers travel, food and accommodation for outstation shoots
Keep a simple record of every job, invoice and payment.
Your first 30 days
- Week 1: take digitals, create your Lookz profile, follow photographers in your city.
- Week 2: do one collaborative test shoot.
- Week 3: post your best images with credits; apply to 5–10 matching castings.
- Week 4: shortlist genuine agencies and email them your digitals.
Modeling rewards consistency. Keep showing up, keep improving your book and keep your profile fresh.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum height to become a model in India?
It depends on the type of modeling. Runway work usually prefers taller models, but commercial, e-commerce, ethnic-wear and parts modeling have no fixed height requirement.
Do I need to pay to become a model?
No. Genuine castings and agencies never charge you to apply or register. Your main costs are basic grooming and, optionally, a few test shoots.

Models are usually paid per day or per project, either directly by the client or through their agency after commission. Always confirm the fee, payment date and usage in writing before the shoot.
Is 25 or 30 too late to start modeling?
No. Commercial, catalogue, ethnic and bridal modeling regularly book adults of all ages.
